Affair in the Phillies Dugout?
Regardless of whether the team wins or loses, one thing is obvious this season: the bats have been quiet. There is much speculation to why there is such a hitting drought this year; some believe that the Phillies naturally improve throughout the season, but could there be tension between players in the dugout.
Recently, it has been reported that Chase Utley’s wife, Jennifer, has been having an affair with Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth. Dirty.com, a website which discusses scandalous sexual acts, first reported on the incident (in an article that has now been removed from their website), which caused others to contribute to the discussion. Most people find these allegations ridiculous as Jennifer and Julia Werth sit in the diamond club during every game.
Are the allegations true? After the recent news of Tiger Woods it could be a possibility. This story would have a much validity if Werth played in theNFL, where these scandals are ignored and most are accustomed to them. The allegation could also explain the rumors circulating about a month ago about Werth being a bad sport in the Phillies’ dugout.
The Phillies have had their fair share of husband-wife scandals, back in 2006 pitcher Brett Myers was charged with assault after he seen abusing his wife, Kim Myers, on a Boston street. Myers now plays for the Houston Astros with a 3.35 ERA.
This season, Werth has his highest average since he first joined the Phillies in 2007, and has hit his most doubles ever only halfway through the season. Utley, on the other hand, has been on a steady decline since his peak average of .332 in 2007, this year he has hit .277 in 72 games. The difference between the two is that Utley will be wearing a Phillies jersey until 2014, and Werth's contract expires this year. This story could seriously effect whether Werth stays on the team next year The Phillies will not want to keep Werth if he makes such a negative impact on the team off the field.
Werth joined the team in 2007 after playing for both the Blue Jays and the Dogers, Utley has been playing for the Phils since 2003 when he hit agrand slam during his first at bat, Utley also recorded the final at-bat at Veterans Stadium. Utley got married in January 2007. Werth is currently the father of two children.
